Joe Chaump
Joe Chaump and Gerri Abbatello Chaump retired from skating in 1968 and 1969 respectively. They had been everywhere and done it all in the world of banked-track skating. It was time for family and each other. We can only imagine the happiness those post-Roller Derby years brought them.
One of the things that really impressed me about Joe and Gerri Chaump is that when a group of skaters decided to resurrect Roller Derby in 1976 the Chaumps were right there to lend a hand. While they may have lost a step or two in the years since they last skated professionally, they more than made up for it with talent and experience. They had the opportunity to skate alongside one of their sons as well. It had to make them very proud.
Joe died this past weekend after a long illness. Good . . .Solid . . . Dependable. The same words that describe him as a skater also characterize him as a family man. To his loving wife and family we offer our heartfelt condolences and sympathy. We also offer our thanks for sharing your husband, your father and grandfather with us for all those years.
Good game Joe. Rest in peace
Phil Berrier
